How to run Alpha > Facilitating conversations

Facilitating conversations

Conversations at Alpha thrive on warmth, curiosity, and authenticity.

Hosts facilitate the conversation, help guests feel at ease, and guide the conversations gently.

Helpers support practically and relationally, keeping the atmosphere warm and balanced.

Six tips for a great discussion:

  1. Ask open questions

  2. Be encouraging

  3. Be yourself

  4. Don’t answer every question

  5. Don’t be afraid of silence

  6. Rephrase tricky questions if needed

We recommend every host and helper has a copy of the Alpha Team Guide or Alpha Youth Discussion Guide. They include the recommended questions to ask within the group discussion time.

If a difficult question comes up, note it down and come back with an answer later. Perhaps using Searching Issues by Nicky Gumbel as a resource.

HERE ARE SOME PRACTICAL PROMPTS TO HELP KEEP DISCUSSIONS ENGAGING AND NATURAL:

Helpful questions

  • How did it make you feel?

  • That’s a great question. What do others think?

  • Could you tell us a bit more about that?

  • Are you wondering if... ? (to clarify or rephrase)

  • Has anyone else felt that way?

  • How did that question come up for you?

For youth groups, consider prompts that invite personal reflection in a relatable way, like “When was a time you felt truly accepted?” or “What’s something that gives you purpose?”

Affirmations and encouragement

  • Thanks for sharing that

  • I really appreciate your honesty

  • That’s such an interesting perspective

  • It’s okay to pause and think. There’s no rush

  • It’s okay to disagree; that’s how we learn from each other

  • I’m glad you’re here

Online, encourage everyone to unmute or use emojis/reactions to respond. It keeps energy high and builds connection.

The Golden Rule: Listen more than you speak.

Your role isn’t to teach. It’s to create space for open, honest conversation where guests feel safe to share and explore faith for themselves.

Two things can derail a group:

  • hosts or helpers talking too much

  • one guest dominating the conversation

In online Alpha, distractions like chat spam or poor Wi-Fi can be challenges, so set gentle ground rules at the start and be gracious when tech hiccups happen.
